![]() If you want, you can hide an app’s App Shortcuts from Siri or Spotlight by pressing the ‘i’ button in the app’s dedicated section. For example, the videogame tracking app GameTrack has an App Shortcut to see your finished games in a popup window Voice Memos has one to quickly record a new voice memo Focused Work has App Shortcuts to quickly pick a session or pause one (I used these during for my writing process this summer) GoodLinks has a handy one to open a random article you saved for later. Apple is advising developers to keep their selection of App Shortcuts flexible but reasonable, covering the typical actions that users typically perform in their apps. App Shortcuts are ready to go: just click one and run it. This is immediately a better experience for folks who were turned off by the Shortcuts app in the past and found the blank shortcut editor daunting. ![]() The difference from before is that app developers created them for you based on what they think is going to be useful in their apps. Technically speaking, these shortcuts aren’t doing anything out of the ordinary: they’re one-action shortcuts to perform common actions in apps. Instead, you’ll find a new section at the bottom of the Shortcuts sidebar filled with pre-installed App Shortcuts from your apps. The first one: once you’ve upgraded to iOS 16 and have updated some of your favorite apps as well, when you open the Shortcuts app you’ll no longer see an empty library or, at best, a handful of Apple’s generic recommended shortcuts. Apple has accomplished this in a variety of ways with App Shortcuts in iOS 16. The whole point of App Shortcuts is removing pressure and friction from users so they can get immediate value out of the Shortcuts app and its integration with iOS. Essentially, Apple is now putting the burden on developers rather than users: app makers will have to decide which parts of their apps’ functionalities they want to make available as App Shortcuts, which you can start using right away with no setup required. In the past, users had to discover ‘Siri shortcuts’ inside apps and explicitly register them in Siri with a custom phrase that entire system is gone with App Shortcuts. App Shortcuts come bundled with apps, and you don’t have to do anything to set them up. Jokes aside, App Shortcuts are interesting for two reasons: they weren’t made for users like me and they show Apple going in a completely different direction when it comes to onboarding users with the Shortcuts app.Īpp Shortcuts are simple, one-action shortcuts that are ready to use as soon as you install an app from the App Store that has been updated to include them. Now, forgive Apple for their historically poor choice of words when it comes to this app, but the feature is called App Shortcuts. ![]() With iOS 16, Apple is launching a new feature designed to make Shortcuts more discoverable, and therefore useful to more people, overcoming the steep learning curve that has long scared thousands of users away from the app. What we do have in iOS 16 is a fascinating new feature to get newcomers started with the Shortcuts app, a grab bag of useful new actions for Apple apps, and some solid developer-related enhancements that will make third-party actions much better than before. If you’re an advanced Shortcuts user and were wishing for more system-level enhancements in addition to stability this year: I hear you, but we’ll talk about this later on. There isn’t a lot for them in this new version of the app: as we’ll see in my iPadOS review, there’s no integration with Files quick actions, no support for Stage Manager actions, and no system-wide hotkeys still. The last point is both important and likely the reason why some Shortcuts power users will be disappointed by this year’s update. In iOS 16, the Shortcuts app hasn’t undergone a major redesign or technical rewrite instead, Apple’s efforts have focused on adding more actions for system apps, extending the developer API, bringing more stability, and making Shortcuts more approachable for new users. I’ll see you for the full story – and more reveals – on Monday. Today, I’m posting a preview of a section of the Shortcuts chapter here, and a section of the Everything Else chapter in MacStories Weekly. One of them is previewing small excerpts from the review in the OS Preview series on MacStories and MacStories Weekly for Club MacStories. A note from Federico: This year, I’ve decided to try some new things for my annual iOS 16 review.

Goblet of Fire competitor is a crossword puzzle clue that we have spotted 2 times. He drinks from a hip flask exclusively, which allows Barty Crouch the perfect cover and means that he can take his Polyjuice Potion every hour without raising suspicion. ![]() The real Moody that Harry sees in Dumbledore's Pensieve believes that the dementors are a just punishment for Death Eaters and expresses disbelief that former Death Eaters can ever reform. His years as an Auror left him suspicious of everyone and he sees plots everywhere adults note that Moody's habit of seeing assassination attempts where there are none means that many people don't believe he's entirely sane anymore. He's a scarred and grizzled man who has one wooden leg and a magical eye that can swivel in all directions, see through solid objects, and see through Invisibility Cloaks. What is definitely true is that Moody used to be a skilled Auror who's responsible for putting many Death Eaters behind bars. Because Barty Crouch uses Polyjuice Potion to impersonate Mad-Eye Moody for the entirety of the novel, it's unclear exactly how Moody-like the man Harry knows actually is-though Barty Crouch is able to fool Dumbledore, which suggests he did a reasonably good job. ![]() While Catherine is stuck at home feeling increasingly isolated, her husband is spending much of his time at college. ![]() Over the years, we have seen that the deep blue paints used on watch dials in the late 1960s, proved to have issues of durability. While the paint will remain entirely intact on some watches, we also see samples that have lost all their blue pigment (so that the dial is now the color of the underlying brass material) and other samples that suffer paint loss in limited areas of the dial (typically, adjacent to the applied markers). The revolutionary square case would be the perfect housing for our avant-garde “Monaco” wrist chronograph.” This way we could be sure that Breitling would not produce a chronograph housed in a similar case when we all unveiled our new products using the revolutionary Calibre 11 microrotor-based self-winding mechanism that was at the heart of Project 99. ![]() We immediately took a liking to the special square shape and were able to negotiate a deal with Piquerez that secured us exclusive use of the case design for chronographs. At Heuer a decision had been taken around 1941 to produce only water-resistant chronographs because any water penetrating a chronograph’s case and reaching the movement causes serious damage that is very costly to repair. We immediately knew this was something special because until then square cases were used only for dress watches because it was impossible to make a square case fully water-resistant. He drew our attention in particular to a new patented square case Piquerez had developed, emphasising the fact that it was fully water-resistant. “One day, a representative of one of our most reliable watch case suppliers, a company called Piquerez, located at Bassecourt in the Jura, came to us on one of his regular visits to show us Piquerez’s latest samples of watch cases in mock-up form. With the Autavia and Carrera both reflecting traditional styles and being well-established in the market, Jack Heuer believed that Heuer could take the chance of creating a third model that would be “out of the box.” As Jack Heuer explained in his autobiography the role of Piquerez in developing the Monaco: ![]() Heuer anticipated, however, that the new automatic chronographs would be a sensation, and to fully leverage the effort and expense of creating the new movement, it would be prudent to add a third model to the line-up. Indeed, both these models could be “upsized”, so that the case would accommodate the larger Calibre 11 movement. The Carrera used a traditional round case and was favored by the dynamic individuals who might have wanted something a bit more elegant, and its style could also be continued in a larger case. The choice of the Autavia and the Carrera made good sense. With its rotating bezel and relatively large size, the Autavia was a tool watch for racing and aviation, and upsizing the case seemed consistent with the style of the watch. And then we decided that we need something for our Automotive-Aviation market, so we made the Autavia. We made it in self-winding, but this movement was quite a bit thicker, so we had to change the shape a little bit. “So we decided to make a Carrera, because the Carrera was already a very good model in non-automatic. In the mid-1960s, as Heuer was hard at work on the project to develop the world’s first line of automatic chronographs (under the code name “Project 99”), the company faced the question of which models would use the new movement (eventually called the Calibre 11 movement). Dating from 19, the Autavia and the Carrera seemed like appropriate models to fly the new flag. As Jack Heuer reflected in an interview: Yes, the Monaco was ahead of its time in 1969, but the last 25 years have established that the “circle in the square” is the timeless design it was expected to be. Since TAG Heuer created the first re-edition of the Monaco in 1997, however, the Monaco has been produced in a wide variety of styles, colors, configurations and materials, some following the lines of the very first models from the 1970s and others taking the Monaco collection even further beyond conventional watch design. Ironically, the Autavia and Carrera would survive the decade that was so challenging for the Swiss watch industry, while the Monaco would be discontinued around 1975. When Heuer introduced its first automatic chronographs in 1969, the Autavia and Carrera moved to new cases to accommodate the larger Chronomatic Calibre 11 movement, while the Monaco was an entirely new model, its radical shape and colors designed to showcase the new movement that would take Heuer into the 1970s.
